The Best Vegan Shampoo Options for Alpha Gals
Are you tired of scouring labels in search of a shampoo that’s alpha-gal friendly? Find your new favorite vegan shampoo here!
The information provided on this site is based on my personal experience living with alpha-gal syndrome. I consistently cite and link to expert sources, but nothing published on this site should be perceived as medical advice. Alpha-gal sensitivities vary by person. Be sure you understand your dietary restrictions, make any needed tweaks, and work with your physician as directed.
Living with alpha-gal syndrome means being extra cautious about what goes into your body—and onto it. While not all alpha-gals are sensitive to mammalian ingredients in health and beauty products, those who are should choose vegan products is a smart way to reduce the risk of a reaction. Here are some of my favorite vegan shampoos that are both alpha-gal friendly and keep your hair looking great, no matter its length, texture, or condition.
To help offset the costs of running SageAlphaGal.com, you’ll find affiliate links lightly sprinkled throughout the site. If you choose to make a purchase via one of these links, there’s no additional cost to you, but I’ll earn a teeny tiny commission. You can read all of the legal blah blah blah (as my little niece says) on the full disclosure page.
What is Vegan Shampoo?
Vegan shampoo doesn’t contain animal-derived ingredients—think honey, keratin, or silk proteins. While some animal ingredients, like honey, are safe for alpha gals, others, like keratin, are often derived from mammalian hair, hoofs, and horns, which can trigger a reaction in some alpha gals.
As you search for the best vegan shampoo for your hair, it’s important to remember that vegan and cruelty-free aren’t the same. Cruelty-free means product developers didn’t test it on animals, but it might still contain animal ingredients. So, you can have a cruelty-free shampoo that isn’t vegan and a vegan shampoo that’s not cruelty-free.

Are All Shampoos Vegan?
No, not all shampoos are vegan. Traditional shampoos often contain animal-derived ingredients like keratin, collagen, and silk proteins. Additionally, they may be tested on animals during development. Vegan shampoos, on the other hand, avoid both animal testing and animal-derived ingredients, opting for plant-based alternatives like plant-based amino acids and vegan collagen. Vegan shampoos are an excellent choice for people with alpha-gal syndrome or following a vegan lifestyle.

Shampoo Bars
As a frequent traveler, I’m a big believer in shampoo bars. Because they are solid rather than liquid, they don’t spill and free up space in the quart-sized plastic bag in my carry-on for other liquids. But even if you’re staying close to home, these eco-friendly alternatives to liquid shampoos pack all the cleaning power and nourishing ingredients your hair needs without the single-use plastic waste.
Ethique Pinkalicious Shampoo Bar

Superzero Shampoo Bars

Innersense Organic
There are others of course
Ah, yes! Probably because I’m cursed with stupidly straight hair. Thanks for sharing those tips for other with gorgeous curls like yours! <3
My faves are Hempz tea tree and chamomile, Biolage Volume Bloom, and L’Oreal Ever pure. Native has a limited fall edition scent of toasted vanilla & honey that smells amazing. I got the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Not a huge fan of Native shampoos and conditioners because my hair is so tangled. But I’ll use a leave in (Sun Bum) to enjoy the scent. Thanks for recommendation on the others. I’ll have to check them out.
Glad it was helpful and thank YOU for sharing your experiences! <3
Thank you for your website!

Thank you!
Hi! I’m so sorry you are juggling Celiac in addition to alpha-gal! I recommend reading the labels of the shampoos that catch your eye to see if they are safe for your gluten allergy.
