Ever find yourself staring blankly at a can of coconut milk, wondering if it can do more than just curry? Spoiler alert: It can! And, you don’t have to be a gourmet chef to embrace these delicious coconut milk uses in your alpha-gal-friendly kitchen.

The information provided on this site is based on my personal experience living with alpha-gal syndrome. I consistently cite and link to expert sources, but nothing published on this site should be perceived as medical advice.

Alpha-gal sensitivities vary by person. You should understand your dietary restrictions, making any adjustments needed, and directing any questions to your physician.

Coconut milk isn’t just for those who love ocean breezes and tropical flavors. For alpha gals who are allergic to milk, it’s one of the best alternatives to traditional dairy.  Unlike plant-based milks that are made from tree nuts, like almond milk and cashew milk, you’re a lot less likely to be allergic to coconut. Plus, with more fat than nut and soy milks, coconut milk ensures richer, silkier dishes. From savory to sweet, these coconut milk uses are as versatile as they are delicious.

Types of Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is made by blending coconut meat with water and then straining the solids from the mixture. It’s like milking a cow, except that the cow is round, grows on a tree, and doesn’t moo. There are three main types of coconut milk you’ll encounter in the wild (or, you know, at your local grocery store):

  1. Coconut “drinking milk” in a carton. This type of coconut milk hangs out with all the other non-dairy nut and soy milks, usually in the cereal aisle. It’s perfect for those who want a nut-free, plant-based milk to splash on their cereal or slurp straight from the carton (I won’t tell).
  2. Canned coconut milk. Found in the Asian foods aisle, this is your go-to coconut milk for cooking. It’s thicker and richer than the coconut milk that comes in a carton and adds a tropical flair to your culinary creations.
  3. Canned coconut cream. This is the thickest, richest type of coconut milk. It also hangs out in the Asian foods aisle.

And just to clear up any confusion, coconut milk and coconut cream are not the same thing. Like dairy-based heavy cream, coconut cream is thicker and has a higher fat content, which makes it perfect for whipping up into dairy-free desserts.

Sage Advice: Do you have a favorite recipe that doesn’t use a full can of coconut milk? Wondering what to do with leftover coconut milk? Freeze it in ice cube trays for convenient ⅛-cup (2-tablespoon) portions to pop into your morning coffee or to add a touch of rich creaminess to a dish.
