The information provided on this site is based on my personal experience living with alpha-gal syndrome. I consistently cite and link to expert sources, but nothing published on this site should be perceived as medical advice.

Alpha-gal sensitivities vary by person. You should understand your dietary restrictions, making any adjustments needed, and directing any questions to your physician.

When alpha-gal turned my world upside down, I started eating a lot more shrimp. Whether I need fresh shrimp or frozen shrimp, small shrimp or jumbo shrimp, I can buy it at a great price at Costco. I always keep a 2-lb bag of shrimp stashed away in my freezer. They defrost in a jiffy, making shrimp and rice recipes a breeze for easy weeknight cooking.

One of my favorite ways to eat shrimp is with rice. It’s the perfect partner for soaking up shrimp’s buttery flavors and a dish’s delicious sauces. Whether we’re talking spicy Thai curries, creamy Italian risottos, fried rice, or loaded taco bowls, the dynamic duo of shrimp and rice is an alpha-gal friendly winner in my (cook) book!

Shrimp is a Protein-Packed, Alpha-Gal Friendly Ingredient

When alpha-gal removes all mammalian meat from your diet, shrimp can be a shellfish savior. With approximately 20 grams of protein per 3-ounce serving, shrimp is a good alpha-gal friendly animal protein. It’s an excellent source of vitamin B12, an essential nutrient that alpha gals sometimes lack, and it adds calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and selenium to your diet.

In addition to its nutritional value, shrimp offers versatility in the kitchen that not all proteins can match. As Bubba Blue explains in great detail in the movie Forrest Gump, there’s barbeque shrimp, boiled shrimp, baked shrimp, sauteed shrimp, and so much more!

Rice as a Partner to Your Protein

But just as the students at Hogwarts must pick the proper spell for the situation, you’ll need the right type of rice for each shrimp and rice recipe.

A long-grain rice like basmati rice or jasmine rice is a good choice for making shrimp fried rice. Its slightly sticky texture and subtle floral fragrance are perfect for the dish. If you make shrimp curry soup, you’ll want the nutty flavor of brown rice to soak up the savory flavors. And when it’s time for something creamy, like shrimp risotto, arborio rice is the move. Its high starch content releases slowly, delivering the irresistibly creamy texture that makes risotto a deliciously comforting dish.

Shrimp and Rice Recipes

Whether you’re craving bold, global flavors or rich, comforting classics, this mouthwatering lineup of shrimp and rice recipes is sure to satisfy. Get ready to dig into these delightful dishes that prove that shrimp and rice are a culinary match made in heaven!

NOTE: Because the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology reports that most people with alpha-gal can tolerate “moderate, lean dairy,” some of the recipes below may include butter, cheese, or another dairy product. If you are an alpha gal who avoids dairy, please make a dairy-free substitution. From vegan butter to plant milk cheeses, Miyoko’s is one of my favorite brands. And, even if you can tolerate dairy, I recommend that alpha gals stick with vegetarian cheese.
