Navigating the Alpha-Gal Diet: Safe Eats & Risky Treats

Alpha-gal syndrome is a tick-borne food allergy to mammalian meat. But it isn't just about avoiding hamburgers and steak --- alpha-gal allergy triggers can be in a variety of other foods.

As you adopt an alpha-gal diet, there are plenty of foods you can still enjoy, but there are also some you'll have to give up, and other ingredients that you’ll need to cautiously consider.

Safe to eat: Dive into a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, seafood, and poultry. These are alpha-gal friendly and safe for your diet.

Mammalian meats, organs, and meat-based products like broths or gravies are a strict no. This includes beef, pork, lamb, bacon, and more.

The “Maybe” Foods: Alpha-gal is not a one-size-fits-all food allergy. What may be safe for one person could be a trigger for another. Know your sensitivities and work with your physician before adding these to your diet.

Milk and Dairy: Some with alpha-gal can tolerate dairy, while others may react, especially to products containing animal rennet or enzymes. It's all about knowing your triggers.

Sugar: Some sugars are refined using bone char, which can be problematic. Opt for raw cane sugar, organic cane sugar, or natural sweeteners like agave or maple syrup.
