The ABCs of Alpha-Gal Syndrome:  Letters A through I

Welcome to the first part of the ABCs of Alpha-Gal Syndrome! We're exploring letters A to I to help you understand this tick-induced food allergy.

A is for Allergy Alpha-Gal Syndrome is a red meat allergy caused by a tick bite. Yes, you heard that right—red meat!

B is for Beef One of the main foods you'll have to avoid. No more burgers, I'm afraid.

C is for Carrageenan This seaweed extract is often in vegan foods but can cause reactions in some with AGS. Read those labels!

D is for Dairy Some with AGS can tolerate lean dairy, but many can't. Know your tolerance level and consult your physician.

E is for Epinephrine Autoinjector This is an essential tool in managing severe allergic reactions. It's more than a precaution — it's a potential lifesaver.

F is for Fish Good news! Fish is an alpha-gal friendly protein. So, go ahead and enjoy salmon, swordfish, and sushi.

G is for Gelatin It's in more foods than you think, like gummy bears and marshmallows. Always check the ingredients.

H is for Hours Unlike other food allergies, AGS reactions can take 2-8 hours to appear. It's the "slow burn" of allergies.

I is for Information Knowledge is power, especially for a recently discovered allergy like AGS. Stay informed.
